The human aspect about learning a new language

El placentero acto de poner los pies en el agua. Habría que preguntarle a mis pies porqué mi mente se relaja cuando la otra parte de mi cuerpo se refresca.

Idiomas, idiomas y mas idiomas!

Lo que amo de vivir en Zurich, Suiza, es que puedo hablar muchos idiomas, ya que además de tener cuatro idiomas oficiales, vive mucha gente de todo el mundo. Además si te gusta aprender idiomas, podés encontrar personas que hablen el  idioma nativo que querés aprender.

En estas semanas me di cuenta  de mi capacidad y facilidad para aprender idiomas.Y entonces descubrí que puedo hablar cinco idiomas: español, inglés, alemán, italiano y francés.

Estos videos de TED para las personas como yo, interesadas en aprender idiomas: How to learn any language in six months, 5 techniques to speak any language y One Simple Method to Learn Any Language. Me han ayudado a encontrar herramientas para seguir aprendiendo y no sentirme estancada en los momentos que me da un poco de vergüenza empezar a comunicarme cuando tengo un pequeño vocabulario.

❤¿Parlez-vous français?

Desde la primera vez que dije que quería empezar a aprender francés (hace dos años) seguido de viajes por París, Bélgica, Lausanne y Annecy (con una guía de conversación) que  me permitieron conectarme mas a fondo con el idioma y empezar a entrenar mi odio y mi habla, noté el increíble y positivo avance con el idioma.

Mi inquietud por  empezar a leer revistas en francés y un manual me hicieron dar cuenta de mi capacidad para aprender palabras por contexto, con mucha fluidez. Y claro  un diccionario español-francés también impulsó.

Fue así que inmediatamente, llegó gente a mi vida, sin mucho esfuerzo de buscarla, (acá en Suiza muchos hablan francés) que me han estado ayudando a que me exprese y me haga comprender en este bello idioma.

A esto agregué un viaje a Lyon por un mes, e instalarme en la bella ciudad Francesa y mejorar mi francés, conocer la cultura y seguir escribiendo mi libro sobre lo que aprendí y vivi durante este tiempo en Europa.

Sobre Lyon (que estuve el año pasado) es la tercera ciudad mas poblada de Francia (detrás de París y Marsella), conocida como la capital gastronómica del mismo país. Allí nació Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, el autor de El Principito y Los Hermanos  Lumière, los creadores del cine.
La gente es mucho mas cálida que la de su capital, por eso me gustó la idea de irme para allá.

❤Sprechen Sie Deutsch?

Dándome cuenta como mi francés fluía con mucha naturalidad, desperté mis esperanzas de seguir estudiando alemán. (Si este es el primer post que lees, te cuento que hace 2 años y medio me vine a vivir a Zurich, Suiza, donde se habla Suizo Alemán)

Supongo que para cualquier persona que no hable alemán y empiece a leer textos, le pasará como a mí que verá las palabras como figuras que están juntas y sin un sentido en sí y encima sin entender el significado. Y además podemos decir que no es un lindo idioma, que es difícil y que bla bla bla….

Por eso me desesperancé con el alemán, creyendo que, a pesar de mi voluntad de leer y escuchar, jamás avanzaría. Hasta que empecé a ver videos de TED (ver links mas arriba) que me impulsaron a seguir avanzando con este ejercicio y encontrar nuevas herramientas para no desesperanzarme en el intento. Que me motivaba a seguir leyendo y escuchando ya que no entender el significado de toooodas las palabras en el momento, no significaba que mi cerebro no las estuviera procesando y sacando su contexto.

Entonces era todo una cuestión de tomarme las cosas con naturalidad. De ser paciente y disfrutar de ir a avanzando paso por paso, con la curiosidad y ganas de sentarme a leer algunos textos y por encima practicar la lengua con alguien.
Y entonces empezó a aparecer gente en mi vida que no esperaba que yo hablara perfectamente el idioma, y que me daba la libertad de expresarme y hacerme entender con el vocabulario que tenía.. Es mas hasta algunos me preguntaban si quería que los ayude a mejorar su español.

Entonces esas palabras que veía como símbolos de a poco volvieron a ser palabras, que luego se transformaron en el rompecabezas para armar cada frase. Y la lectura, la forma de encontrar mas piezas para permitirme expresar con mas vocabulario.

❤Para terminar 

No hay nada tan reconfortante de estar en un país y comunicarte con la gente local en su idioma y conocer mas a fondo su cultura desde su propia voz. (Digamos, todos sabemos que los Franceses prefieren hablar en francés que en Inglés)
Creo que en el fondo me parece fascinante la idea de buscar otras formas de expresarme. Es también adaptarse y salir de la zona de confort que puede darme hablar en español o en inglés y la verdad, me da una satisfacción muy linda ir logrando eso.

❤EN Languages, languages and more languages.

What I love about living in Zurich, Switzerland is that I can practice a lot of languages. That’s because have four official languages, and live a lot of people from all over the world. So, if you are passionate in learning languages, Zurich is an amazing city to get in touch with people that speak as a native the language you want to learn.

On this weeks I realize my ability in learning languages. So I discovered that I can speak five languages: spanish, english, german, italian and french.

The next videos of TED talks, for people like me, that are interested in learning languages : How to learn any language in six months, 5 techniques to speak any language and One Simple Method to Learn Any Language. Helped me to find tools to keep on learning, even on that moments I feel that I’m stuck, or shy to speak the new language.

❤¿Parlez-vous français?

From the first time that I told myself I will learn french (two years ago), that continued with travel around Paris, Belgium, Lausanne and Annecy, that I started to listen and speak the language and during this travels my comprehension improved gradually. (With a conversation guide book)

I realized also my ability to learn words by context while reading magazines in french and a grammar book. A dictionary also help me a lot.

A lot of people came into my life without making an effort to look for them, to talk with me in french. Btw, a lot of people in Zurich speak perfectly french. This people helped me to express myself in this beautiful language.

So I will make a month language trip to Lyon. To live in this beautiful french city, improve the language, learn about the culture, and continue to write my book about the experiences I lived during this time in Europe.

About Lyon (that I was last year) is the third most populated city in France (after Paris and Marseille) also known as the gastronomic capital of the country.

There Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, was born (the writer of The Little Prince) and The Brothers Lumière , the ones that invented the cinema.
Also I found the people more warm than in Paris, so I found Lyon the right place to try this experience.

As I discover how my french was flowing without any effort y awoke my hopes to continue learning german. (If this is your first post you are reading, since two years I’m livig in Zurich, Switzerland, and here the people speak in Swiss German)

I guess that for any person that doesn’t speak german at all, and begin to read texts in german, could see the words as symbols that are together without any sense, and meaning. Also we could say that is not a nice language, that is difficult to learn, etc etc etc.

That’s why I gave up with german, thinking that, even my interest to read it, and listen to it I would never make a step forward. Until I start watching this TED videos (look up on this post) that pushed me to keep on. Also even if I don’t know the meaning of all the words I’m receiving. My brain was working and processing all this new information.

So I started to take things naturally. To be patience, and enjoy the process, with the curious of a child. And after that a lot of people started to enter into my life without expecting that I speak perfect the german, the allowed me to express with the vocabulary I had. Also, a lot of people asked me if I could help them with their spanish.

So now the words that I saw as a symbol turned again into words, that after turn in a puzzle to build every sentence that I built.

And reading, a way to find more pieces to express with much vocabulary.

❤To conclude

There’s a great relief to talk the language that the people speak in the country and to get in touch with the culture by their own voice of the country. (Like in France, where people prefer to speak Frecnh than English)

I believe that is fascinating to find another ways to express myself.

It’s about adapt, and getting away from the zone of comfort (that could be to speak in spanish or in english) and honestly I feel so satisfied achieving this objective.
